UPDATE 2022: This image here was based on an older pic from 2015. After looking through my old work, I decided to replace the image with a slightly more up-to-date version. New (better) model of the Sabre class, as well as an update to the planetary background and stellar nebula.
Class overview:
The Sabre class was a type of Federation starship in the late 24th century. Originally conceived as a patrol frigate, the ship class received a general overhaul after the catastrophic Borg attack even before the first ship of this class was launched. The number of armaments was doubled, and parts of the structure were reinforced with additional armor. These new ships have been categorized in the Light Cruiser weight class.
She was envisioned as an extension of the Steamrunner class light cruiser, so that, when working in tandem, the two classes would complement and support each other. With limited facilities, long-term missions were generally outside of its design, but for internal Federation missions, or specific deep space objectives, the Sabre proved to be a very capable ship.
Produced at Starbase 1, in orbit around Earth and later also in the Copernicus Fleet Yard, Luna as well in the Utopia Planitia Yards at Mars.
Four Sabre class vessels were assigned to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers in the year 2370.
Small, fast, highly maneuverable, and well armed, the Sabre has also proven its worth as a defensive vessel. Many ships of this class were involved in the defense of Sol during the Second Borg Incursion, as well as being involved in the conflict against the Cardassian/Dominion alliance. While not specifically a warship, the Sabre held its own and showed itself to be a valuable asset for Starfleet and the Federation.
