HAPPY BIRTHDAY STAR TREK

49 years ago, on this day in 1966, viewers were first introduced to an extraordinary television series.  The episode was called The Man Trap.  The series was called Star Trek.  Viewers were immersed into a world of action, adventure and exploration.  The brainchild of a mostly unknown television writer named Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek became an icon for science fiction and a popular backdrop for social commentary of the time.  Lasting only three seasons on NBC, the series found new life in syndication and generation after generation of fans.  After nearly five decades, five spinoff-series and twelve motion pictures with a thirteenth in production, Star Trek has not only proven its staying power, it has proven that a dream and hope for a better tomorrow always endures.
